One of the things I have learned to love since moving to Georgia is being within a reasonable driving distance from a myriad of beaches. As a child my family would vacation and that is one thing my husband and I value and are implementing in our own family.
Having not grown up in the South, I had a lot of research and discovering to do. Anything new can be a bit overwhelming, but here are some resources I have found to help with selecting the perfect vacation destination.
Word of Mouth – We all know the saying, “closed mouths don’t get fed.” Ask, ask, ask! A majority of the folks I interact with on a daily basis are from the area. I simply ask them where they like to vacation. Some of the recommendations I have received over the years include Orange Beach, Alabama, Jekyll Island, Georgia, Destin, Florida, and Amelia Island, Florida.
Southern Living Magazine – Growing up, I would spend my Sunday’s leafing through Southern Living Magazine at my Kentucky native, grandmother’s house. So it is a given that I look to the magazine for recommendations. I particularly like their “The South’s Best Beaches.” Some of their recommendations include, Shell Island, Florida, Topsail Beach, North Carolina, Padre Island, Texas, and Tybee Island, Georgia.
Conde Naste Travler – Like Southern Living, I reference Conde Naste Travler frequently. Due to our close proximity to Florida, their “Top Florida Beaches” recommendations are helpful and include, Siesta Key Beach, Panama City Beach, and again Amelia Island.
Once I narrow down one or two destinations, I gather more intel from Tripadvisor and the local visitor’s convention bureau regarding accommodations, attractions, etc.
This year, we are going to vacation in Laguna Beach, Florida, 10 miles west of Panama City Beach, Florida and in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
How does your family go about selecting the perfect vacation destination?
What are some of your recommendations? I would love to hear them!
