Celebrating Local Black History

February is a time to reflect on the history and achievements of African Americans. This evening we had the opportunity to attend a Dalton-Whitfield NAACP sponsored Youth Night at The Emery Center.

The Emery Center, previously The Emery Street School was built twenty one years after the end of the Civil War in 1886, to address the educational needs of African American children in the Whitfield-Murray County area. The K-12 school closed its doors in 1968 when students were integrated into Dalton Public Schools and other local school systems.

During the event the boys enjoyed mingling with family and friends, pizza, crafts, games and Black History trivia. It was a light and educational evening and I would encourage everyone in the area to tour the historic site.
